What is Responsive Design?

With a Responsive Design site though, you can determine how the website content is displayed for different browser widths using CSS code.

This allows the site layout and format to change depending on the width of the browser in use and so providing a responsive site.

As this series of posts on updates to the Catalyst WordPress Theme is mainly focused on detailing the increasing functionality added to it since its initial release, only the main feature and functionality changes are included here.

Catalyst Theme Version 1.0.1

• added additional catalyst hooks in the header and footer areas (allowing for Catalyst Custom Widget Areas and Catalyst Custom Hook Boxes to be hooked into these areas)
• included a new text option for the Breadcrumbs trail on the Homepage (so the breadcrumb trail can be anything you like)
• added a meta description to Category Archive Pages based on the Category Description (the Archive Page options for Categories, Tags and Authors get much more functionality beneficial for SEO added in future releases of Catalyst too)

Catalyst WordPress Theme Version 1.0.4

While the next versions (1.0.2 and 1.0.3) included a couple of bug fixes, the next release of Catalyst WordPress Theme in Mid January 2011 was the biggest yet.

Version 1.0.4 saw the Catalyst Excerpts Widget totally rebuilt. This is a very useful widget for including specific Post and/or Page content in a given widget area (whether sidebar or Catalyst Custom Widget Area).

With the Catalyst Excerpts Widget, you can set it display a featured Post or Page, or to display the last X-number of posts and whether that is just from a particular category or all posts. It also allows the display of the full content or excerpted content.

You can also specify the starting point in the list of posts. So if you want to miss out the first post, then using the Offset feature, you can do so. This could allow you for example to have one such widget displaying the most recent post, and another widget displaying the remaining posts excluding the most recent.

Using Multiple Catalyst Theme Excerpts Widgets

So this now allows control over excerpts widgets on an individual per-widget basis for total flexibility.

Also included in the new excerpts functionality was a custom thumbnail set, allowing for different thumbnail sizes on Blog Pages and the Excerpts Widget for example.

Other features added in Catalyst WordPress Theme version 1.0.4 included:

• a Homepage document title in the Core SEO options
• redesign of the Catalyst Theme Framework HTML to deliver up the content first (believed to be more SEO friendly)
• additional Google Fonts in the font selections
• direct links to the style.css stylesheet in the Core Options (Info) and the Dynamik stylesheet in the Dynamik (Body) options
• and a whole host of other stuff like the addition of classes for various elements

Catalyst Theme Cheat Sheet

Coinciding with the release of this update, the Catalyst Theme Cheat Sheet was also launched. 

Providing a written guide to the theme’s functionality, the 160 page Cheat Sheet also included tips and advice on how to make the most of Catalyst Theme (with subsequent revisions covering new functionality etc, it has now grown to around 250 pages).

So within a month or so of its launch, Catalyst had not just fixed its expected share of minor stuff etc, but had also seen it’s functionality added to significantly too. 

The next version was just a few weeks away however and was to include the biggest changes yet to the Catalyst WordPress Theme!

I’d been fortunate enough to see the Catalyst Theme Framework as it developed through its beta stages and head towards it first GA (General Availability) release in early December 2010.

Even in it’s initial incarnation, it was a spectacular step up from what the existing user base of Frugal Theme owners had to work with (and that was pretty cool in itself).

As mentioned previously, Catalyst Theme has been designed as a Parent/Child Theme with Catalyst Theme being the parent providing the core functionality and using child themes for design and styling.

Let’s look at what was included in the first version of Catalyst Theme.

Catalyst Theme Framework Version 1.0

The first version of Catalyst Theme Framework came fully equipped with:

Strong SEO Options
Catalyst Theme provides sitewide SEO settings for defining the Title Tag structure,  Robots Meta data and the ability to set specific information for the Homepage such H1 Header Tag placement and meta data.

Additionally SEO options for each Page and Post can be defined such as the Title, Meta Description and Keywords.

Flexible Header Area
A Header Area that could be split in two (separate left and right areas) and that allows for Text or a Logo Image to be used and that provides hooks for the inclusion of widgetized content.

The provision of hooks throughout the theme means Image or Text content can be included quickly, simply and very easily.

Flexible Navbar Options
The ability to separately configure upto 2 Navbars is provided (you can use 0,1 or 2 navbars as desired).

Each Navbar can be configured using Catalyst’s own default menu structure or WordPress Custom Menus. They can be located above or below the Header (and in the case of Navbar 1 beside the Left Header Area), with the ability to include or exclude Pages or Categories from them as desired.

With options for including RSS, Email subscription, Twitter and other links/text, the Catalyst Theme Navbars are very easy to configure and very flexible.

Custom Page Layouts
From the outset, Catalyst Theme included the ability to create unlimited custom page layouts where each layout could have its own sidebar structure and unique set of widths for its sidebars and content pane – or as we’ll see below, the same layout and widths but with it’s own unique widget areas for different widget content!

Flexible Content Display
As a result of its Custom Page Layouts, Catalyst Theme provides an incredibly flexible approach to displaying content.

Each Page or Post can be set to follow an individual page layout structure if required – or left to follow the default layout structure specified (and which can be any layout structure you wish).

Catalyst Theme Page Layouts – per Page or Post!

Catalyst also makes it easy to set the post content for blog pages to be either the full post content or just excerpts, with settings to further define what is displayed and how.

Along with defining things like Breadcrumb trails, excerpt images and meta byline data and  comments, even the first version of Catalyst provided a very full featured set of options for content display.

Footer Area
Constructing the Footer Area became simplicity with Catalyst Theme. Footer content is controlled using shortcode content options for the left, right and central areas. Just drag and drop (or remove) a shortcode to change where it appears – and amending the custom content shown there such as links to pages and other content is quick and easy.

Custom Widget Areas and Hook Boxes
Here’s where Catalyst Theme really starts to get powerful.

Catalyst allows us to create Custom Widget Areas (and Hook Boxes) and define which Custom Page Layouts they are included on.

That allows different pages to show different widget based content – and remember that each custom page layout also has its own sidebar structure defined too, meaning that a page can be made totally unique to the rest of the site if desired.

All without any coding required!

Very powerful, very simple!

A Child Theme with over 600 Design Options
Catalyst also includes a super powerful child theme called Dynamik which is where pretty much most elements on a WordPress site can be styled for design purposes.

From background colours to header borders to font types sizes and colours, Dynamik lets you style the site content quickly and easily using drop down selection boxes, simple data fields and color pickers.

Everything from the Body background, the Wrap Border, Header area, Navbars, Content areas, Sidebars, Footer, Widgets and much much more can all be tweaked and adjusted to get exactly the look you’re after.

Custom CSS Builder
And if you do want to adjust some aspect of an element that isn’t readily available in the Dynamik child theme, Catalyst includes an easy to use Custom CSS Builder.

The Catalyst Custom CSS Builder

The Custom CSS Builder allows you to build CSS code and apply it to an element easily.

Again, you don’t have to know CSS coding – just select the element (say the text for H3 heading tags, or the Navbar area etc) and select what you’d like to style and how (such as the background or border etc).

As you define what you want with easy to use selection criteria, it builds the CSS code for you automatically.

Skins
And once you’ve got a design you like, you can save and export the Dynamik Settings for use on another site, and likewise do the same for the Catalyst Core Settings – effectively saving them as your own Child Theme.

Overview of Catalyst Theme 1.0

That covers most of the major functionality that was provided in the initial release of Catalyst Theme framework.

With a full suite of design options and solid core functionality for developing flexible and well optimised site structures and content, this first version of Catalyst Theme showed it was already a substantive and powerful theme providing lots of functionality through a well organized and easy to use interface.

And as we’ll see in future posts in this series, since then more and more fantastic functionality has since been added to Catalyst Theme!

Since Catalyst Theme was first released in December 2010, it has had several updates and revisions that have added a great wealth of new and additional functionality to the theme.

In this series of posts about Catalyst Theme updates and features, we’re going to cover the main changes and new functionality that has been added to Catalyst Theme over the last 15 months or so… 

If you haven’t revisited Catalyst Theme for whatever reason over the last few months, I hope this will give you some fresh ideas about its amazing capabilities and hopefully prompt you to take another look at what it might offer you now.

If you are a more current user of Catalyst Theme, it should also provide a good indication of the strength of the development effort that has gone into it, and continues to do so….

Let’s start at the beginning.

Before Catalyst Theme…

For those who remember it, there used to be another WordPress theme called Frugal Theme. It was a clean, fresh and flexible theme – minimal by default but incredibly flexible too if and as required.

It was a theme that gave a user the ability to design a WordPress site easily enabling the user to adjust and define a huge array of design settings with no need for coding.

It was written by the same guys as Catalyst Theme.

As Frugal developed there came a point when it made more sense to start over with a clean slate. 

That was the opportunity to create something special…..

Catalyst Theme!

Catalyst Theme Framework

Catalyst Theme is fully fledged WordPress theme framework that uses the concept of Parent and Child Themes.

Catalyst Theme itself is actually the parent theme that provides the central functionality for the site’s structure while a child theme provides the outer layer of styling and design customizations.

So for example, the core Catalyst functionality would include SEO options, the type of Header, Navbar structure and composition, Page Layout structures, the number and positioning of the Sidebars and the Footer composition etc.

The child theme then determines things like the width settings for Pages and Posts, margins, padding, border etc along with type fonts, sizes and colours etc.

A parent and child theme structure like this means that the core functionality can be updated independently of the child theme in place. Likewise it is easy to swap between different child themes supported by the parent without affecting the parent functionality.

Catalyst Theme divides the various settings for core functionality into clearly defined tabs for quick navigation and ease of use – as shown here.

The example above shows (some of) the Catalyst Core options for the Navbars. 

The other tabs across the top of every Catalyst Core Options screen provide similar control over sitewide SEO choices, the Header, Content etc as shown.

Just to re-emphasize the point – these core options are those for the Catalyst Theme Parent. 

In the case of the Navbars shown above, they allow you to specify the number of Navbars for the site, where they are located, whether they use WordPress Custom Menus for their content etc… There are no design styling options provided here.

That’s where child themes come in!

A Catalyst Child Theme Called Dynamik

The Catalyst Theme package includes a very special child theme called Dynamik. It’s an incredibly flexible and powerful child theme that allows most aspects of a site’s design to be customized.

The Dynamik Child Theme is a powerhouse of design options that allows any one to customize their site design without the need for any coding knowledge.

The image above shows the settings provided in Dynamik for just some of the settings used to design the styling for one of the two Navbars. 

Even on its initial release, the Catalyst / Dynamik combination included hundreds of such settings, all cleverly organised for straightforward clarity into tabbed sections of Header, Navbars, Content, Sidebar, Footer etc etc to make it easy to find and adjust the particular settings you might be looking for.

Most child themes provide a ready made template based designs that you fill out with your content. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to change things to suit your particular requirements (without hacking the code anyway) and often requires a different child theme to be used instead. 

With the Dynamik child theme however, you’re given pretty much a blank canvas and the ability to change pretty much anything and everything to how you want (without resorting to coding).

Summary

In this first post, we’ve looked at the origins of Catalyst Theme leading up to its release in December 2010.

It’s also shown how Catalyst is a WordPress Theme Framework that follows the Parent/Child Theme concept and what this means for the functionality it provides and how it is divided up.

Update Mar 2012

The WPFacemakerPro guide detailed below has been updated a few times since it’s original release.

However, there have been a number of changes to Facebook in the last couple of months that mean some of the content relating to creating new Pages and Apps is now out of date and significant sections of the guide would need re-writing to provide the step-by-step detail the guide originally attempted to provide.

Whilst the guide remains useful and the principles it shows generally valid, the guide itself has been withdrawn for the time-being. 

Existing Pages should continue to work (possibly requiring some changes to layout etc due to the new Timeline features introduced in Facebook), although other Facebook requirements and future changes may of course change that too.

I hope those of you who have previously downloaded this free guide have found it useful.

Earlier this year Facebook changed the method for creating Facebook Pages.

Instead of using the previous method of static FBML pages, iFrames can now be used to display content on Facebook Page tabs.

The iFrame method embeds content from a webpage which is hosted elsewhere into the Facebook Page.

That means you can now have the content from a WordPress site displayed within your Facebook page!

So, it’s now easy to design and create content for Facebook Pages using WordPress.
